Obese people at higher risk of contracting coronavirus, suggests a study | Trending News in India Trending News in India

London: The effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the risk of COVID-19 infection have been investigated through a novel approach by researchers at the Queen Mary University of London. Several observational studies have reported the link between cardiovascular risk factors and COVID-19 severity. However, these studies could not ascertain the cause and effect relationship due to the observational design.

The new study, published in the science journal Frontiers in Genetics, used a novel approach called `Mendelian Randomisation`, which leveraged the individual genetic information, to investigate the effects of cardiovascular risk factors on the risk of COVID-19 infection. Lead author Dr Nay Aung from the Queen Mary University of London said: “Our results show that individuals with high body mass index (BMI), a marker of obesity, and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (also known as `bad` cholesterol) are at an increased risk of getting COVID-19.

Other cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure and diabetes) do not appear to elevate the COVID-19 risk.”Our findings support the use of BMI and LDL cholesterol as important metrics alongside other known characteristics (such as age and ethnicity) in the risk assessment of vulnerability to COVID-19 infection,” added Aung. The findings may have an impact on public health policy, whereby those who fall in the at-risk obese category or those with extreme hyperlipidemia in the general population may require more rigorous social distancing or shielding.

Furthermore, studies assessing the role of cholesterol modification therapy during illness or hospital admission could be undertaken to assess the potential impact on outcomes.

Thanksgiving 2020: History, significance and importance of the holiday | Trending News in India

Thanksgiving 2020: History, significance and importance of the holiday | Trending News in India Trending News in India

New Delhi: The traditional annual holiday of Thanksgiving will be celebrated on Thursday, November 26, 2020. The Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated on various dates across the United States, Canada, Brazil, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia.

The Thanksgiving Day celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people.

This year, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday on Tuesday with the traditional pardoning of the national Thanksgiving turkey.

The event marked Trump’s second public appearance since the General Services Administration told President-elect Joe Biden they’re ready to start the formal transition process, following brief remarks earlier in the day on the stock market.

Donald Trump exercised his pardon power during a Rose Garden event, granting the turkey named Corn a full pardon. The other turkey, Cob, will live, too. “Corn, I hereby grant you a full pardon!” Trump said, pardoning the turkey.

“We give thanks to the priceless freedoms that we’ve inherited and we ask God to watch over and protect our nation,” the outgoing president said.

Both birds are expected to live out the rest of their days at Iowa State University.

The holiday is often the busiest time of the year as family members either travel away for a holiday or gather to celebrate with one another. This holiday is particularly rich in legend and symbolism, and the traditional fare of the Thanksgiving meal typically includes turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie.

The Thanksgiving was not a traditional holiday till October 3, 1863, when Preident Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

Since then the holiday has been annually proclaimed by every president and the date chosen is the last Thursday in the month of November.

Earth had a minimoon for around 3 years before it drifted away few months ago | Trending News in India Trending News in India

Earlier this year, a minimoon was found orbiting Earth by a group of astronomers. The minimoon has now drifted away but astronomers said that more such minimoons will be found orbiting Earth in the future.

The minimoon was first spotted by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona. The astronomers spotted a dim object called 2020 CD3 in February but they were not sure whether it was a a minimoon or an artificial object like a rocket booster. But Grigori Fedorets at Queen’s University Belfast and his team used several telescopes to observe the object closely in order to find out more about its composition and other details.

Fedorets and his team found that the celestial body had a diameter of about 1.2 metres and it was probably made of silicate rock. “Based on simulations, the average capture time for minimoons is only nine months, so this was captured for a longer time than is expected,” says Fedorets. “But this object flew very close to the [regular] moon, and that put it into a more stable orbit.”

According to astronomers Minimoon or 2020 CD3 drifted out of the orbit of Earth in March, but the researchers are hopeful that once the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is completed in Chile it will help in detecting many more objects like it.

“We could detect a minimoon once every two or three months in the best-case scenario. In the worst case scenario, maybe once a year,” Fedorets was quoted as saying by newscientist.com.

United Kingdom 's four nations to relax COVID-19 restrictions to save Christmas | Trending News in India Trending News in India

LONDON: The four nations of the United Kingdom have agreed to relax COVID-19 restrictions for Christmas to allow up to three households to meet at home for five days.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have taken differing approaches to handle the pandemic so far but the leaders of the devolved nations reached an agreement with London on Tuesday on rules governing the festive period.

Three households will be able to form a “Christmas bubble”, allowing them to meet up at home, places of worship and in outdoor public places but not at indoor hospitality or entertainment venues from December 23 until December 27 under the plans.

“People want to be with their loved ones and those close to them for what is the most important holiday of the year,” senior minister Michael Gove said on Tuesday.

Limits on travel will also be scrapped so that people can meet up, with an additional day on either side for those going to and from Northern Ireland.

A national lockdown in England is due to end next week after which different parts of the country will face varying restrictions as part of a tiered system announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

A decision is expected later this week on which areas will fall into the different categories.

The United Kingdom has one of the highest tolls from the coronavirus pandemic, reaching 55,838 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, according to government data published on Tuesday.

“The virus won’t take time off, so please be cautious,” said Scotland`s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. “If you can, stay at home with your own household.”
